Our Mission Team Is Deeply Moved
Our 2008 Mission Team included (left to right) Mallory Welk, Rose Markowicz, Katy Gertz, Pastor Greg Jewison, Patti Bacher, John James, and David Gillaume. |
Pastor Greg preached on three occasions, with translation by Rev. Daniel Topalski. |
| Pastor Greg served communion with the Bulgarian words, "Tialoto Hristovo," which means, "The Body of Christ." |
We presented a banner based on New Hope's logo as a gift to the Russe church. |
| Marta, a member of the Russe congregation, tells Pastor Greg how she barely escaped deportation to a Russian labor camp. Her late husband, who was a pastor, was thrown in prison for years by the communists. |
Marta's photo albums had pictures torn out by the communist police – one of many means they used for intimidating the population. |
| The Russe congregation has an outreach to children from families in a poor neighborhood. The children are pictured singing a Bible song in a cramped living room – in front of a broken window. The children clearly love this ministry! |
This is the neighborhood outside the home where the children meet. We observed a pressing need for a larger and safer meeting space for them. |
| Pastor Greg and Patti Bacher share a laugh with two Bulgarian pastors, Rev. Daniel Topalski (the new pastor of our partner church in the city of Russe), and District Superintendent Bedros Altunian. Rev. Altunian was pastor in the city of Varna when the communists lost power. Communists had torn down the Varna Church, but church members salvaged the bell and buried it for forty years. |
The new church in Varna (with bell tower) was built with help from the World Methodist Council. |
